Zoe Saldana

Zoe Saldana attends the 2010 Women In Film Crystal+Lucy Awards in Century City, CA June 2010.
Zoe Saldana never fails to impress on the red carpet. With the year she's been having, her stylist must be on speed dial. Starring in chart-topping movies such as Avatar, Star Trek and Death at a Funeral, Zoe has carved her name firmly onto the A-list. If you're looking to turn heads yourself, scroll down to find tips on stealing Zoe's look for less.

Take a Leaf Out of Her Style Book: Zoe Saldana

Zoe Saldana attends the 'Star Trek' Germany premiere on April 16, 2009 in Berlin, Germany.
Zoe Saldana arrives at Star Trek Los Angeles Premiere at the Graumans Chinese Theater in Hollywood CA on 4/30/2009.
Zoe Saldana sits front row at the Lela Rose Spring 09 Fashion Show
Zoe Saldana arrives for the UK Film Premiere of Star Trek at the Empire Leicester Square on April 20 2009 in London, England.
Zoe Saldana appears on Jimmy Kimmel Live on May 6, 2009.

Zoe Saldana and her stylist have had a busy summer. With the release of her summer smash "Star Trek" the Dominican diva had to come hard (and correct) on the red carpet. Naturally, Zoe delivered. Her style is simple. Pick a dress that will shine in its own right. Whether its large bows or bouncy frills, Zoe's dresses have people running to the internet to find out what she wore. To wear a dress with this much punch, you need confidence. See below for ideas on where to get YOUR shine.

My Picks!

Left to right: ASOS Parachute Dress, $82.76, www.asos.com; Tiered Halter Dress, $34, www.forever21.com; Animal Puff Dress, $100, www.topshop.com; Gardenia strapless wool dress by Azzaro, $2445, www.net-a-porter.com
Left to right: Karen Millen Rose Corsage Pencil Dress, $331.20, www.asos.com; Eliza J Ruffle Wrap Dress, $158, www.shop.nordstrom.com; Illusion Fringe Sequin Dress by Haute Hippie, $595, www.shopbop.com; From the Marchesa Spring 09 Collection

Whether it's a hot date, exclusive party or gala fundraiser, a head-turning dress is a fail-safe investment. All you need is one stand out detail to take an otherwise classic dress to a whole new level. Think oversized bows/flowers, excessive frills, sequins galore and voluminous shapes. Anything goes. Just be sure to pick a dress that flatters your shape. A-line dresses that cinch at the waist suit everyone.

Zoe Saldana Covers Latina...

Zoe Saldana is on a non-stop publicity tour for her upcoming movie Star Trek and she made a quick pit stop on the cover of Latina magazine. The online version of Latina is pretty good. I encourage all to check it out here. For snippets of Zoe's interview read below...

ON HER OWN SEXY CONFIDENCE: “Look at me. I’m skinny, I have a big nose, no tits and no ass, but in a room full of beautiful women, I would still leave with the most gorgeous guy.”

ON SHOOTING STEAMY SEX SCENES WITH STAR TREK CO-STAR CHRIS PINE: “There’s nothing sexual about shooting a sex scene, you must know!” she says. “You are sweating your ass off under the lights, or you’re freezing. You’re hungry, or you’re bloated and gassy because they had pizza on the set that day.”

ON HER DREAMS OF WINNING AN OSCAR: “You know that cover that Kate Winslet did for Vanity Fair recently, where she said, ‘You bet your ass I want that Oscar’?” Saldana asks. “Well, it’s the same with me. I’m not going to be like, ‘I just want to be known for my work.’ No, I want that golden statue on my shelf. Whether it happens or not, it will not determine the kind of substance that I feel I contributed. But I want it… Shoot for the stars and I’ll settle for a cloud.”

ON AVOIDING A HOLLYWOOD EGO: “You’ll never see me shopping on Robertson Boulevard or hanging out in super-public spaces like that. I’m fiercely territorial about my privacy. And I cannot follow a crowd,” she says. “I never want to get to the point where I’m walking a red carpet thinking, ‘I’m fabulous.’ At times, Hollywood is going to get the best of you, and you will wake up feeling overconfident. But I have too many people that keep me in check if I fail to do so myself.”

The issue will be out in June/July.

Workwear 101: Business Casual

Zoe Saldana arriving at the premiere of 'El Cantante' at the Director's Guild of America Theatre on July 31, 2007 in Los Angeles, California.
Jada Pinkett Smith makes an appearance at the Preschool of America to read to children and unveil a new book with child safety tools for parents sponsored by Duracell on May 2, 2007 in NYC and Kimora Lee Simmons arrives at the JLO Sweetface Fashion Show in West Village, Manhattan, February 10, 2006 in NYC.

Please take note. Business casual does not have to mean preppy v-necks and crisp white shirts. It’s time to start thinking outside-the-box. Explore fluffy cardigans, bright colored shoes, charming jewelry and A-line, knee-length dresses. Below I picked four pant-shirt combos since we’re still in winter, kinda (global warming has me confused!) For the summer months invest in body skimming, as opposed to body hugging, dresses that linger around your knees.

Booty-licious

Kelly Rowland candid taken in 2005.
Ashlee and Jessica Simpson leaving their hotel last Summer.
Zoe Saldana at the New Era Fits Booth at the VMA Style Villa at the Bryant Park Hotel last August in New York City.
Kate Moss candid in Notting Hill before meeting an unidentified friend for lunch at Zucca in 2004, London.
Ugh, I’m mad at how cold it is. Today walking around in D.C. was treacherous. Every step a negotiation. I know other states have it much worse but the slushy snow put me in a bad mood. To make matters worse I was so unprepared. I have boots, but they aren’t completely flat and the sole’s grip is worn down. I’m currently on a quest to find some cute, flat and functional knee-high boots that’ll see me through the rest of winter but take me effortlessly into the next season. Think suede boots and denim skirts in spring.

It Suits You!

Amerie arriving at Out Magazine's Out 100 Awards last week in New York City.Mary J Blige at the GUCCI Ginza Flagship Store Opening Reception Party Tokyo, Japan earlier this month.
Star Jones attending the launch of the dramatized audio recording of "The Bible Experience" held at the West Angeles Church of God in Christ last week in LA.
British actress, Naomie Harris at the after show party following the UK premiere of "Miami Vice," in July of this year in London.
Iman and Zoe Saldana at the cocktail reception to benefit the "Keep A Child Alive" charity co-hosted with fashion designer Valentino at the Valentino Boutique last week in New York City.

If dresses aren’t your thing, you can always opt for a smart contemporary suit. I think they make the perfect alternative to a cocktail dress. You could go with a tailored fit like Mary J Blige and Star Jones or you could pick something a little unconventional like British actress Naomie Harris and Iman. Now if you’re really brave, take a style cue from Amerie and ‘bust’ out in a three-piece vest and tuxedo pants. It'll make the ultimate show-stopping entrance… you just know the men couldn’t stop looking at her chest and bare back!

Note: Also peep Halle in this gorgeous Ralph Lauren suit. Photo taken by The Sartorialist.

Zoe Saldana, Part II

Zoe Saldana arriving at the Coca-Cola Campaign Launch Of "Coke Side Of Life" at Capitale in March of this year in New York.
I love this look. Casual yet still glamorous enough to get you some attention. I couldn’t find a comparable print top in the U.S., but you might be able to find a plain colored one like the one below from Topshop. The coca cola bottle is optional!

Steal Zoe's Style...

Jeans: Wide Waist Denim Trousers, $118.00, Arden BShirt: Sheer Printed Blouse, $90.00, www.topshop.co.uk
Belt: Circle Braid Waist Belt, $7.50, www.wetseal.com
Bag: AKO Fall Hoop Shopper, $32.00, www.akostyle.com

I don’t like Zoe’s bag so I changed it and it’s as simple as that! The rest of the outfit is so cute though, I’d definitely rock this with flats for a comfortable weekend date. Don’t forget to accessorize with lots of gold jewelry like Zoe.

Jeans 101: Long ‘n’ Lean

Kimora Lee Simmons at the premiere photography exhibit of portraits by Brett Ratner, held at Altair Lofts, NY in May of this year.
Rihanna Promoting Clinique Laboratories New Perfume "Clinique Happy"last month in Tokyo, Japan.
Joy Bryant arriving at the Christian Dior "D'Trick" Launch Party at Fenix in Los Angeles.
Zoe Saldana at Coach's Legacy Collection Launch Party in NYC.

This is a topic near and dear to my heart. Standing tall at 5’9”, I often find it difficult to locate pants/trousers of any kind, long enough to meet my ankles. As a general rule, no matter how tall you are, pants should reach at least half-way down the heels of the shoes you are wearing. This of course doesn’t apply to pants intended to be short i.e. capris, skinny jeans etc. My friends and I used to refer to short pants as swingers, meaning they swing at your ankles and never quite get to your feet! Avoid joining the swingers club and scroll down for some great jeans…

Zoe Saldana

Zoe Saldana arriving at the Saks Fifth Avenue and Instyle "Key to the Cure" benefit on last week in New York City.Zoe Saldana is turning into such a style icon. This dress, which I’m partly convinced, is by Rebecca Taylor, looks stunning on her. Putting her twist on the winter trend of wearing black tights with dresses, Zoe opts for fishnets… It totally works!

Steal Zoe's Style...

Dress: Silk Cami Dress by Rebecca Taylor, $350.00, Saks Fifth Avenue
Clutch: Tassel-Flap Satin Clutch, $14.99, Target
Shoes: Goodie, $99.95, Steve Madden

I tried in vain to find the white version of this dress but came up short. If anyone has some alternatives let me know ;) This dress by Rebecca Taylor comes with adjustable straps so you can alter the length. I love the fishnet tights Zoe wore with her dress, so try these for just $4.99.

Style on the Go...

Lenny Kravitz and his 16 year-old daughter, Zoe Kravitz, attending the Jean-Paul Gaultier Ready-To-Wear Fashion Show in Milan last week.
Nicole Richie attending the 2nd Annual "The Pink Party." A Star-Studded Elyse Walker Benefit Supporting Cedars-Sinai Women's Cancer Research Institute.
Rosario Dawson arriving at the 2006 Spike TV Scream Awards earlier this week.
Oprah Winfrey at the “Hearst Inaugurates the Brand New Hearst Tower” event last night.

I know some of these photos are old as hell but I had to post them anyway. Zoe and Lenny Kravitz are the epitome of style, at the risk of sounding sick, they almost look like a couple! Rosario Dawson and Oprah look HOT in flaming red, its still the color of the moment. And as for Nicole Richie, we need to hold her down and force feed her some fried chicken; I’ll restrain her legs, someone else volunteer to hold down her arms. I will admit that she looks ‘prettier’ now than she did back in “The Simple Life” days, but enough is enough already. On another note, I’ve never been a big fan of Pucci, but their dress looks fabulous on ol’ Nikki, she’d better work it!

Knitted Affair...

Thandie Newton attends the American & British Vogue London Fashion Week cocktail party, hosted by Editor-in-Chief of American Vogue Anna Wintour and her UK counterpart Alexandra Shulman in February - Too chic!
Zoe Saldana attends a special screening of "Melinda and Melinda" last year
Keyshia Cole attends the Jacob & Co. Sneaker Launch at Manhattan Motors during Olympus Fashion Week September 13, 2005 - Lovin' this cardigan!

I was inspired by the first photo of Thandie Newton wearing that gorgeous knitted shawl over her equally fabulous dress, and it got me thinking about how knitwear is making a come back. As the summer months draw to a close I may invest in a chunky cardigan, as opposed to a jacket, to see me through the seasonal transition. Most people wear cardigans in the day or for unofficial occasions (see Keyshia Cole), but I think with the great selection out there, you can also wear them for more formal occasions (see Thandie Newton). Learn how in the next post…

Cheap Frills!

Zoe Saldana looking mighty cute in this bright red, frilled shirt
Amerie at Blender Magazine's 5th Anniversary in May, 2006
Jessica Alba filming this year's MTV Movie Awards Promo, hence the scary looking woman in the background!

I've noticed a lot of celebs sporting these Victorian inspired, frilled shirts. I wasn't sure about them at first, but now i'm a believer! My favorite is Jessica Alba's (above) I especially love the brown leather belt she's wearing over it... I need to steal this style pronto!

P.S. I might not be able to post as much this week because i'm away, but I have my laptop so i'll try and a post every other day! :)
